So What Are We Doing About This?

One in five women in Ireland will be abused by a partner at some point in their lives.

One in five.

This one is a woman that you might know – she may be in your family, she may be in your neighbourhood, she may be in your church, she may be in your workplace.  She is invisible to you.

Over the last sixteen days, we have brought you some of the myths about domestic abuse – it doesn’t always come with a bruise, sometimes it’s about control; it isn’t something that happens to poor people, or in ‘some’ cultures: it can happen to any woman. Most of all, it is NEVER your fault.

If you have been abused, you will be told it is because  you are weak, because you are mad, because you look at other men, because you don’t cook well enough, look good enough, you’re not a good mother, you’re not a good partner, you don’t understand him, you don’t support him, you made him do it…

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

An abuser abuses because he chooses to abuse.

COPE Galway Domestic Abuse Service is dedicated to working with women who have been abused or who are in an abusive relationship.  If you’d like to talk to us then pick up the phone or drop in – maybe we can help.
