We believe communities have a very important role in assisting us with our mission. Volunteering is one very important way in which our community can help us in our work.

Service Description:

In our day centre we provide a welcoming environment where older people can drop in for a cup of tea and talk to staff, volunteers and neighbours.  The centre is there for older people and is led by their needs. We want to ensure that no older person is lonely or isolated.

Volunteer Role Description:

To provide support and practical assistance to older people who use our Sonas Day Centre in Mervue. Our Day Centre provides a place where older people can come to meet neighbours, make friends; take part in classes and health promoting activities. We aim to reduce isolation and promote healthy ageing. Older people who use our center live in their own homes independently.

Responsible to: Lead worker

Main tasks:
  • One to one and group interaction with older people (chatting, making teas and coffees and making sure everyone feels welcome at Sonas)
  • Practical support such as shopping, laundry or delivery of meals on wheels to people’s homes
  • Encourage and support the activities that take place in Sonas; our breakfast club, art class, gardening- these are health promoting and fun!
  • Helping us at the lunch club- setting up the room, serving food, wash up &making sure everyone is looked after
  • Take part in our day trips or outings
  • Assist older people to organise activities and events. Be interested in positively promoting our mission and implementing best practice at all times in your interactions with older people and with the wider community
Person Specification
  • Friendly, enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to demonstrate respect and empathy to clients
  • Previous experience working with or supporting older people is desirable

Level of English required: Intermediate

Induction and Training

The volunteer will receive induction training prior to starting the role. Training will be if is deemed appropriate for the role.

Support and Supervision

Volunteer will be supervised by the Manager/Designated Person.

Recruitment Process
  • Submit an application for the role
  • Screening – once the application form is received and the applicant is considered a suitable match for the role, the applicant will be invited to an Interview
  • The interview will take place in the relevant service. Successful applicants will be offered the volunteer role subject to 2 Reference Checks from Irish referees and Garda Vetting
  • Induction and Orientation will be provided prior to commencement
  • Trial period – volunteers commencing with COPE Galway are subject to a trial period
