COPE Galway Candidates Pledge – 2019 Local Elections

Local election candidates asked to pledge to address the housing and homelessness crisis in Galway.

Galway City is in the grip of an unprecedented housing crisis, causing increasing numbers of families, and individual men and women to become homeless and relying on emergency accommodation.

COPE Galway is asking all candidates who are standing for election to Galway City and County Councils asking them to pledge that, if elected, they will ensure:

  1. Meet housing targets by building new social housing.
  2. Ensure adequate and suitable responses to homelessness.
  3. Ensure age appropriate social housing options in Galway.

If elected local councillors do not deliver on this pledge in the lifetime of the next Councils, we fear that there will be a continuation in the growth of homelessness in Galway City with a resulting lasting negative impact on the lives of an increasing number of local citizens.

We are encouraging people in Galway to discuss this pledge with local elections candidates when they are canvassing them, and to ask them about their commitment to addressing the unprecedented housing crisis we are currently experiencing in Galway.
