Positive Ageing Week 2024

30 September – 6 October

Embracing Ageing and Celebrating Our Positive Ageing Heroes

Positive Ageing Week is an campaign that highlights the many positive aspects of ageing and celebrates the invaluable contributions of older people to our lives and communities.

Positive Ageing Week 2024 carries on the theme of Challenging Ageism – Reframing How We Think, Feel and Act towards ageing and older persons.

Positive Ageing Heroes

A collection of inspiring stories from older heroes in Galway who are great examples of positive ageing.

Throughout the week, individuals, families, schools, businesses, and community groups take the opportunity to honour the older people who enrich our lives and strengthen our communities.

The Galway Positive Ageing Heroes exhibition will take place in Galway City Museum from September 26 to October 10, 2024. Admission is free.

This exhibition highlights the inspiring stories of exceptional older individuals from Galway City and County who have graciously shared their personal experiences of ageing, showcasing their resilience and contributions to our community.

Celebrating Galway Positive Ageing Heroes

Ageing is changing. Could 60 be the new 40?

Positive Ageing Week allows us to reflect on the changing nature of ageing in Ireland.

A conversation with our Local Ageing Heroes.

For Positive Ageing Week, four remarkable individuals whose stories feature in the 2024 Local Ageing Heroes exhibition joined Jacquie Lynskey, Head of COPE Galway Senior Support Service, for a chat.

Rosemary Finlay, Patricia Lawless, Joe McCarthy, and Peter Kelly shared their personal stories, offered insights on #positiveageing, shared advice, and brought plenty of laughs.

A big thank you to our local heroes for an inspiring, humorous, and heartwarming conversation!

Children’s Positive Ageing Week Colouring Competition!

Children are invited to honour the special older people in their lives by participating in our colouring competition! Download this year’s beautiful Galway-themed design, print it and encourage your children or students to colour it in. Once finished, they can gift their masterpiece to an older person who is special to them.

Win a year-long family pass, for two adults and two children, to Galway Atlantaquaria, Salthill. To enter, email a photo of the coloured design to competition@copegalway.ie. Send your entries before Monday 7 October.

We’d also love to share photos of children giving their older heroes the coloured cards on our social media pages, so feel free to email those too.
